George was born in Baden, a division of the German Empire, to Johann Michael Trottman and Varena Barbara Keller. He came with his parents to the United States, at about seven years of age, and made his home at Dresden, Ohio, until he was 22, when he moved to Linton township.

In his early years he gave his name to the M.E. church at Dresden, Ohio and in 1852 became a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church.

He married Catherine Magdalene Studer on 4 January 1853 in Coshocton. They had 14 known children, 6 sons and 7 daughters.
