Invalid Pension 392771 387860/Widow 782765 574883. 5 feet 8 3/4 inches tall; black hair and eyes, dark complexion. Wounded left groin by grape shot Battle of Nashville, Dec 14, 1864. Suffered disease mouth result of scurvy, piles, heart disease, rheumatism, kidney disease. These diseases were brought about by the lack or food and proper nutrition of any kind or medicine. An Army on the march fed its soldiers hardtack and whatever it could forage. On one occasion all they had to eat was watermelon. That was all the foraging party could find. Scurvy occurred in more than one Civil War soldier. It is caused by a lack of Vitamin C. Piles were brought on by the chronic diarrhea all of the soldiers suffered due to the poor diet they had. Most of them were bleeding piles. Rheumatism developed from sleeping on the ground and marching through cold, sleet, snow and rain without blankets or tents. Kidney disease developed due to the many diseases such as measles, mumps etc. A soldier marched whether he had sufficiently recovered or not and usually suffered a relapse. Thank you for taking time to remember this man who fought for our freedom and who lost the quality of his life defending our right to have one.
