Eugene Mickey was born on January 28, 1911, in Porterville, California to Edna Malone. His parents divorced long before his birth; so, he nor his mother took his birth father's name. His mother later married Arthur Lane Mickey and Eugene and his older sister Dovey were adopted by him when Eugene was a baby.

Eugene grew up in Bakersfield, California and had a memorable childhood. His sister Dove said that their father adored Eugene and would take him everywhere with him. When his father would take Eugne to the pool hall he would put a bell on his suspenders so that he could hear where he was in the room. Eugene also said that he and his friends would ride their bikes down the Panorama Bluffs -- which are extremely steep even today -- and often he would "wreck" on his bike and go home pretty skinned-up.

He attended local schools in Bakersfield, but left high school early to enter the U.S. Navy. World War II broke out after he completed his service in the Navy and he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Because of his naval service he was transferred from the Army back to the Navy and served at Almeda, California during the war as a fireman.

He met Hazel Cook and they were married on November 9, 1941. They were blessed with 2 daughters and one son. Mickey and Hazel were married for 47 years before his death.

Eugene Mickey, or Mick/Mickey as he was known, was a career fire fighter. He served as the Taft Fire Department Fire Chief for over 30 years. During his service he implemented many lifesaving techniques to the Taft Fire Department that saved lives and were cost-effective for the City of Taft.

Mickey died on November 19, 1988, after a long battle with lung cancer. He is buried in the West Side District Cemetery in Taft, California.

Mickey's family loves him and misses him very, very much. He is the grandfather of 9 and the great-grandfather of 2.

We love and miss you Mickey, Dad, and Papa Mick!!!!!!
