OGDENSBURG - Ernest J. Whitcombe, 87, of 170 Arnold Road, died Monday at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center.
Mr. Whitcombe was first a brakeman and then a conductor for New York Central Railroad.
He was a member of the Waddington American Legion Post and St. Mary's Cathedral parish. He was a volunteer at St. Joseph's Nursing Home for more than 35 years, making apple pies and delivering doughnuts daily. An avid reader and antiques collector and dealer, he enjoyed woodworking and made reproductions of antiques and duck decoys. He attended Mass daily at Notre Dame Church.
Born June 30, 1917, in Ogdensburg, son of George and Lucy MacPherson Whitcombe , he attended St. Mary's Academy. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 in Iran, where he worked on the railroad transporting troops.
He married Margaret A. Strader on July 3, 1959, in Lisbon.
Surviving besides his wife are two brothers, three sisters, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral with the Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Burial will be in Foxwood Memorial Park.
