Sister Mary Emmanuel Miller –
Zita Miller was born to Edward and Caroline Kilhofner Miller on April 9, 1896, at Oran, Missouri. She was one of six girls. The others were: Marie, Bertilla, Anna, Loretta and Genevieve. She had two brothers: Joseph and Andrew.
Zita attended Guardian Angel School at Oran and became an aspirant at St. Francis Academy in Joliet. On December 8, 1912, she became a postulant and entered the Novitiate as Sister M. Emmanuel on August 12, 1913, and made first vows on August 12, 1915, and final vows on August 12, 1919. She was trained to be a music teacher, having received her Bachelor of Music degree from Columbia School of Music, Chicago, Illinois in June 1927.
Her mission record includes: St. Francis de Sales in Chicago; St Francis Academy in Joliet; Sacred Heart in Hubbard Woods; St. Procopius in Chicago; Sacred Heart in Englewood; St Michael in Sigel; St. Pascal in Chicago; St. Peter and Paul in Chicago; St Mary in Des Plaines; St George Hospital in Chicago; St. Francis Convent Infirmary in Joliet and St. Procap in Cleveland, Ohio; St. Stephen in Johnston, PA and Immaculate Conception in Toledo, Ohio.
Sister Emmanuel had three other sisters who also entered religious life. They were: Sister Laurence (Marie), Sister Michael (Genevieve) and Sister Virgil (Bertilla).
Sister Emmanuel died at the Motherhouse on July 31, 1944. She was 44 years old and had spent 31 years in the religious life.
