William Claude King, Jr., 34, World War II veteran of Winnfield, died suddenly of a heart attack in Monroe Friday morning, December 26.
Military funeral services were held at the Gorhamtown Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. Alwin Stokes officiating. Burial was in Gorhamtown Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Appropriate military rites were held at the grave with members of the Winn Parish National Guard Company serving as a firing squad.
Mr. King is survived by his mother, Mrs. Minnie King of Winnfield; four sisters, Miss Ida Rae King, Mrs. Gladys Smart, Mrs. Louise Edmonds, and Mrs. Kathryn Warren, all of Winnfield; and three brothers, Franklin, Willo James, and Johnnie Lee King of Winnfield.
He was a member of the South Winnfield Baptist Church and recently aided in building the new church building.
A veteran of World War II, King entered the Army in February, 1942, and trained at Ft. Sill, Okla., Ft. Riley, Kans., Ft. Benning, Ga., and Ft. Ord, Calif. He went overseas in the Pacific area in May, 1945. At the time of his discharge in December, 1945, he was a staff sergeant in the Army.
Pallbearers were Teal C. Calhoun, Mayo Faith, Louis Sholars, Arnet E. Garriss, Charlie C. Corley, and Kenneth T. Egan, all members of the Winn Parish Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.
Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Thomas of Shreveport; Elmo Miller of Alexandria, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hamilton, R. C. Guy, Mrs. Leonia J. Guy, and Mrs. Charles Norton.
