Ashburnham-- Oliver James Schoonmaker, 85,former president of W.F. Whitney Mfg. Co., died Sunday in Pasadena, Calif. (Ashburnham Town Report says death was in Altadena, Calif. MHB) Born in Hurley, NY., Oct.24, 1882, son of Cyrus and Mrs. Deborah(Carpenter)Schoonmaker, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Edith (Whitney) Schoonmaker. A graduate of Harvard University in 1906, he served in World War I as a major with the 55th Infantry, 7th Division and in World War II as a colonel with the Inspector General Office. He was a 32nd degree Mason. After WW II, he resided in New York for ten years and later moved to California. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs.Oscar F. Jarmon of Ashburnham; a son, David Whitney Schoonmaker of Worcester; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 24, in the Ashburnham Community Church.
