Catherine M. Stanford, 84, of 336 W. Main St., died Saturday at her home.

Mrs. Stanford and her husband, Leonard B. "Babe" Stanford, assisted in the operation of Bauter's Home Laundry Servicefrom 1948 until 1956, when they took over the business. They retired in January 1981.

Mrs. Stanford also worked at the former J.J. Newberry Co. store for several years and was an avid bowler with several local teams, competing in many tournaments.

She was a charter member of Black River Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5218 Auxiliary, a member of the Curtis Apartments Association and Bethany United Methodist Church and a former member of the Greater Watertown Senior Citizens.

Born Jan. 23, 1912, at the Reeves family homestead, South Shore Road, Pillar Point, daughter of Charles Elijah and Ella Minnie Reeves Bauter, she attended Dexter High School and Watertown High School.

She married Leonard B. Stanford on Nov. 17, 1934, at Felts Mills Church of Christ with the Rev. Arthur Williams officiating. The couple live on St. Mary and South Hamilton streets. Mr. Stanford died June 14, 1982.

Surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Floyd F. "Bill" Bauter, and a sister, Mrs. Arthur (Hazel) Ball, died before her.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with the Rev. Tracy Cook, pastor of Bethany United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Black River Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
