Charles Baird was an expert in signal equipment for railroads. He installed and was in charge of the signals, telegraph, and telephone lines in Pennsylvania Station. Baird enlisted in World War I and organized the 413th Telegraph Battalion, the first Signal Corps unit ordered overseas. The battalion trained employees of the Pennsylvania Railroad who volunteered form all parts of the line. Baird was 38 when he died overseas.
Charles lived in Richmond Hill with his wife, Teresa (Terez) and son (Charles Jr.). His name is inscribed on the World War I My Buddy Monument and the Morris Park (Richmond Hill) World War I Monument.

Prior to his service in WWI, Charles enlisted as a Private in the 1st Pennsylvania Infantry, Co. H in 1898, serving in the Spanish American War. On 25 Sep 1901, Charles enlisted in the US Army Signal Corp, discharged 24 Sep 1904 at Cebu Cebu, Philippines and applied for a passport at the US Consulate in Manila, the Philippines on 10 Oct 1904.

Gravesite Details

The original gravestone was damaged and a replica was made by the Maple Grove Association. Original stone was placed at the foot of the new one.
