"Mrs. M. J. Arthur died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. A. Roberts, of Pilot Township, Iowa County, Iowa, Saturday, September 10, 1904, aged 73 years, 9 months and 10 days, after many years of patient suffering. After a short service at the house, she was taken to her home church at Millersburg, Iowa, of which for many years she had been a faithful member. Her funeral service was conducted by Rev. P. A. Keopple of Ladora. His sermon was a beautiful tribute to the memory of the departed and contained a bright promise for the sorrowing ones left behind. Mary J. Petitt was born in Pennsylvania November 6, 1831, and at the age of twelve moved to Ohio with her parents, where she grew to womanhood and was married to Josiah Arthur, March 1, 1847, whose death she survived by a quarter of a century. After a few years of married life, they moved to Iowa and located on a farm east of Millersburg, where she resided with her husband until his death which occurred September 17, 1879. After three years, she then removed to Millersburg where she lived until a short time before her death. Their union was blessed with eight children, seven of whom now survive her; three sons and four daughters, B. F. Arthur, of North English, Iowa, W. D. Arthur, of Millersburg, Iowa, G. E. Arthur of Airlie, Minnesota, Mrs. G. F. Tucker, of Sheldon, Missouri, Mrs. E. F. Beard, of Pipestone, Minnesota, Mrs. T. A. Roberts, of Williamsburg, Iowa, and Mrs. L. C. Miller, of Des Moines, Iowa. Mrs. Arthur left two brothers and one sister, only one brother, F. A. Pettit, of Millersburg, was present at the funeral, the other brother, John Pettit and sister, Mrs. John Wilson, reside at Bedford, Iowa. She was a devoted and self-sacrificing mother, kind and sympathetic neighbor and a willing helper to all in the hour of need."
