His parents were deeply pious and his mother especially, taught her children religion and especially, missions, and stories of missionaries. From a young age he had a strong desire to read and study constantly. He pursued an education, and taught a few months and studied till he commenced preaching in 1834. He was of a kind an gentle spirit which gained him warm friends at an early period of his life.
In Jan. 1836, he offered himself to the Foreign Mission Board of Freewill Baptist as a candidate for missionary service to Orissa, India. He and his wife were accepted and on 22d of Sept. 1835, they sailed to Calcutta, India, along with Rev. Jeremiah Phillips, who sailed in the same vessel, and took charge of of the bazaar schools connected wwith the General Baptist mission in Balasore.
In a few months, their bright hopes were succeeded by suffering and disappointments. They lost a 16-mo-old daugh, as well as Rev. Jeremiah Phillip's wife. They became prostrated by disease and his became of a chronic type. Mr. Noyes made rapid progress in the language, and became a ready and able preacher, and for a time encouraging results attended his ministry. But, he was not able to shed the disease, and in 1841, they returned to their native home. For a time, he pastored small churches in Maine, and Lynn, Mass., then went to Roger Williams church in Providence, RI. Here the congregation grew until they had to add a balcony of seats. His health failed and he retired from the pastorate forever. He did recover enough to make a trip to England with Rev. Jonathan Woodman, to visit the General Baptists of England.
His knowledge of languages exceeded all but few, and he was an able theologian, lecturer and a writer.
He was taken with consumption and in his debilitated state, he went to Lafayette, Ind. where his brother-in-law, Mr. M.L. PIERCE, had generously provided a home for him and his family.
He died the 10th of Sept. 1854, age 40 years. "A Hebrew Reader," "Strength of Hindooism", "Lectures on the Truth of the Bible;" and two or three sermons, were published before his death.
