Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Methodist church here for Christian John Baertch, 74, Route 1, Soldier, who was accidently caught in a large hay baler Friday on his farm two miles south and a mile east of Soldier. He was born Nov. 13, 1893, in Atchison county and spent most of his life in the Soldier community. He was a member of Soldier methodist church and Circleville Lodge no. 20, AF&AM. He was a farmer many years. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Beulah Baertch, at home; three daughters, Mrs. Sue Bader, Urbana, Ill, Mrs. Mary Rumsey, DeKalb, Ill., and Mrs Calolee Clowers, Dayton, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Sophia Spiker and Mrs. Anna Stachelbeck, both of Holton; and Mrs. Addie Murray, 613 Topeka, Topeka; a brother, Carl Baertch, Holton; and 10 grandchildren. Burial will be in Soldier cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Soldier Methodist church. Mercer funeral home at Holton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Baetch was baling straw in a field near his home with a round baler attached to a tractor. He stopped the tractor when the baler apparently became clogged and was apparently attempting to make adjustments on the large baler when one of his arms caught in the machine and he was pulled into it. There were no witnesses to the accident and it is thought Baertch was caught in the baler while trying to make adjustments to the machine without turning it off.
Baertch had left his home to go to the field at about 2:30 . He was found by a daughter who went ot look for him at 6 when he failed to return.
He had made several rounds with the baler before the accident occurred. The machine was a roto-baler and Baertch was baling straw. One of his arms was caught in the machine and tore off.
