Born about 1591 (aged 44 on 3 April 1635). Shoemaker from Nazeing, Essex, who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 on the "Hopewell" & settled in Roxbury. (On 3 April 1635, "shoemaker John Ruggles," aged 44, "uxor Barbarie Ruggells," aged 30, "Jo[hn] Ruggells," aged 2, "Elizabeth Elliot," aged 8, "Giles Payson," aged 26, and "Isack Morris," aged 9, as a family group from "Nazing in Essex," were enrolled at London as passengers for New England on the Hopewell). Buried at Roxbury 6 October 1663.
MARRIAGES: (1) By about 1633 Barbara _____. She died at Roxbury in January 1636[/7?].
(2) In 1637 or later Margery Hammond ("Marjery Ham[m]ond a maid servant, she came to New England in the year 1632 & about half a year later was joined to the church & after some years she was married to John Ruggl[e]s of this church"). On 6 December 1674, " Sister Ruggles wife to John Ruggles Senior died. She was a meek & a Godly Christian, much lamented by her neighbors, her fever & ague turned to a calenture, at last, disordered her head, but her very disorders were holy & sanctified & so she finished. Buried the 7th day of the month."
John Ruggles was brother of THOMAS RUGGLES {1637, Roxbury}. JOHN RUGGLES {1635, Roxbury}, son of Thomas, sailed for New England on the same vessel with the subject of this sketch.
John Ruggles and EDWARD BRIDGE {1637, Roxbury} called one another brother or brother-in-law, probably implying that one had married a sister of the other, or that the wives of the two men were sisters. Unfortunately, none of the wives of these two men have been identified.
Pope stated that this immigrant died on 15 September 1658. This was actually the date of death of the nephew of the subject of this sketch.
