He married first to Mary Love in 1836 in Erie County, New York. They had five children. They migrated to Iowa about 1863, settling in Decatur County. He was one of six who helped erect and organize the Presbyterian Church at LeRoy, Iowa. He married second to Sarah Matilda Kendall, the widow of Davison Macy, on 4 June 1874 in Garden Grove, Iowa. He is buried in the Buffum plot with his first wife; his second wife, Sarah, is buried with her first husband, Davison, in the same cemetery.
