First Bishop of Cincinnati. Founding American Dominican Friar. Born in St. Mary's County, MD, he was educated in Belgium, joined the Dominicans (1790), and was ordained (1793). After a short imprisonment by the French republicans he went to England and taught in Surrey, a new Dominican college. Returning to the United States in 1804 he set out for a Western mission. In 1819 he built the first church in Cinncinnati, and founded Athenaeum, now Xavier University, He was responsible for building a total of eight churches. His consecration as Bishop in 1822 was celebrated at Saint Rose Church.
