**********
Joe L Holbrook accepted his first job at the age of eighteen with the Dresden Enterprise during 1895, he began as a printers devil (young boy working below the level of an apprentice), after working for a few years he married Lillian Gardner, not long after Holbrook and Mrs Lillian purchased the Dresden Enterprise. Holbrook never held a degree in journalism, having learned his talented skills of writing as a self taught journalist.
Holbrook soon became known far and wide for his editorials and his column called "Goose Bumps" which were published each week for forty six years in their newspaper the Dresden Enterprise.
Holbrook loved Dresden and used the power of the press to promote the best interest of Dresden and the surrounding county, the people and culture were the topics of his many published articles and stories.
Having been the son of a Confederate soldier Holbrook loved the south, his love for the south, its southern charm and its people came through in many of his writings. Holbrook was a devout member of the Dresden Methodist Church where he taught the church's young men's group for many years.
Joe L Holbrook died at his home (Holbrook House) on West Main St (on left just past Bowlin Funeral Home) on January the 12th of 1954, was laid to rest in the Sunset Cemetery.
Joe L Holbrook will go down in history as having been one of the most prolific (newspaper) writers in this region, his work lives on in the thousands of newspapers that were almost lost in the tornado that destroyed the Dresden Enterprise office during Dec of 2021. ~~~ from Weakley County History and Culture, https://www.facebook.com/weakleycountyhistory
