His father moved west in 1848 when George was only 8 and he built a hotel in St Croix Falls, Wisconsin. George's siblings were Salina, 1843-1909, who married William F Colby; another sister who married Jacob markley and lived in Montana; Lucinda (Lucy), 1833-1921, who married Jmes Matthews about 1850 and had 12 children, all George De Atley was born in Taylors Falls. They later moved to Shell Lake, Wisconsin where James built a hotel.

Sister Katherine married Alvah Brown. Brother Charles went to Montana in 1863. Salina and William Colby had seven children; William F, George, Mary, Ida, Pauline, Clara, and Cora.

George Sr. built the water power mill for the trading company in St Croix Falls and many of the residences of that city. He also built the largest hotel there, which was later destroyed by fire.

George Jr. spent 26 years in the lumber and logging businesses. He owned 120 acres of land in Shafer Township, land which he had purchased in 1881 and on which he settled in 1891.

George married Mary Kelly, 1844-1918, of Davenport, Iowa in 1869 and they became parents of Floyd D and Grace M De Atley. Wife Mary was the daughter of James Kelly of Indiana.
