Shahik was the oldest of five children born to Abram Karimi-Masihi and Maryam Yaghobi-Masihi. After emigrating to the USA, he settled in Cleveland, Ohio and earned his Ph.D. in Immunology. A lifelong hemophiliac, Shahik was President of the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) Board in 1988 and 1989. He married Rebecca (Becke) Hein on June 26, 1987. Shahik received tainted blood from a clinical trial, and tragically acquired HIV. Becke passed away on June 16, 1989, and Shahik followed her in 1995. Shahik and Becke had no children together. Becke had a son, Isaac, from a previous marriage, who Shahik loved as his own son.
Shahik is survived by his mother Maryam, and sisters Jasmine, Hermik, and Rima. His father Abram and brother Nejdeh share a place in Heaven with him.
