Mr. Richard E. Bird, age 78, died on Tuesday April 21, 2009 at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was a 1951 graduate of the University of Georgia receiving a BBA in Accounting and a Masters Degree in Finance in 1952. While at the University of Georgia he was elected to Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma Scholastic Honor Societies. He was also a member of Delta Sigma Pi Professional Fraternity and served as President of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Mr. Bird operated a cotton gin and warehouse in Portal, a family business dating back to 1845 and was a farmer in Portal and the Westside Community. He was elected Man of the Year for Bulloch County Soil Conversation in 1976. The Bird family was the 2000 Farm Family of the Year. He became a director of Bulloch Telephone in 1965 and served as President since 1978. In 2000 he was elected to serve as a Region Director of the National Telephone Cooperative. He has served on the Board of Directors of several financial institutions and on advisory boards of several agri-business companies. He was elected to the board of the Bulloch County Hospital Authority in 1967 and served as Chairman from 1975 until 1999. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Hospital Association for six years and received their distinguished service award in 1988. This award is given each year to two people in the State of Georgia. He is a former member of the Educational Advisory Council for WVAN-TV. He was awarded the 1999 Rotary Citizen of the Year Award, and a 1995 recipient of a Deen Day Smith Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.

Surviving is his wife of 52 years Evelyn Hart Bird of Portal, GA; two daughters and sons-in law Donna Bird and Donald Williams of Hephzibah, GA and Laura Bird and Ron Daniels of Statesboro; four grandchildren Adam Williams (Andrea), Paige Williams, Dylan Bacon, Carlie Daniels; two great grandsons Clay Williams and Connor Williams.

The visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Conley officiating assisted by Rev. Ben Gay and Rev. Don Berry.

Interment will be in Upper Lotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bill Smith, Dr. Randy Smith, Thomas Joyner, Garland Nessmith, Glenn B. Nessmith, and Dr. Billy Nessmith.

Honorary pallbearers will be employees and directors of Bulloch Telephone Cooperative, Brothers of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, Jerry Brown, Curtis Deal and Eddie Powell.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.
