Lieutenant Commander L. Hancock, USN, was designated Naval Aviator #3175 (lighter-than-air) in 1924. Graduated U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1910. Awarded the Navy Cross during the World War as a member of the submarine service. See Navy Cross information below.


LT CDR Hancock, the executive officer, was killed in the destruction of the Navy dirigible USS SHENANDOAH (ZR-1) at Ava (an unincorporated community in northwestern Noble Township), Ohio.


The destroyer USS HANCOCK (DD-675) was named in his honor.


CITATION: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Commander Lewis Hancock, Jr., United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession in Command of the AL-4 during World War I. Under his command this vessel made numerous contacts with the enemy, and on one occasion attempted the dangerous feat of diving at a submerged enemy submarine to ram her.
