On March 22, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed his great granduncle, Congressman Anson Burlingame as our second Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Qing Empire (China). The city of Burlingame, California was named after Anson Burlingame. Richard Lutz is a direct line descendant of Joel Burlingame (1800-1883), the father of Anson Burlingame.(see certificate)

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1809) was his 1st cousin 8 times removed.

Theologian Roger Williams (1602-1683, founder of Providence Plantations and the state of Rhode Island was his eighth great-grandfather..

Richard Lutz was born at the Oakland Maternity Hospital in Oakland, California, but his parents made their home in Lincoln, California. After the tragic death of his Father in an industrial accident shortly after his birth, his mother moved to San Francisco where he lived for most his life.

He was a man of many interests. He did lapidary work, made jewelry and collected mineral specimens that were donated to the California Academy of Arts and Sciences when he retired in the 1970s. His collection included some quartz specimens he collected from an abandoned gold mine he found on property he purchased in Nevada City, California in the 1960s.

He was briefly an owner of Home Creek Resort, at Huntington Lake California, but his share went to his wife Nina Mardel Lutz in 1947 after divorce. A couple of the cabins he built at the resort were still standing in 2011, as was the house he built in Nevada City.

He loved classical music and had a large collection of old 78 RPM recordings. He also converted the glassed in porch in the back of his flat in San Francisco into a greenhouse, and there he grew orchid plants for years.

He had an interest in ancient Egypt and was a self-educated expert in the subject.

He spent his retirement years traveling between Mexico and Oregon. He went fishin'. Unfortunately on the Oregon leg of one of his trips a tumor was detected. He was cared for by cousins in Oregon before he passed on.
