Viroqua was born in Georgia to William John Kersey and Mary "Polly" Scarborough. She was the only girl with five brothers: Joseph Cone, Asa, William Jackson, James "Jim" Downing Sr, John F., Ulysses Samuel Sr.

From there the family slowly moved down to Florida, losing William to an unknown cause of death, and settling in Green Cove Springs for some time. Here, 1890, she married her long time spouse, George Washington Johns. A couple of her brothers filtered down to DeSoto County, FL (later Hardee)and they too followed.

You can find Viroqua in the census records in GCS, Clay County, Orange Park, Wauchula, Avon Park,Highlands County and she died in Pasco County - at one of her daughter's homes.

Viroqua was a woman of many nicknames: Viroqua, Visa, Veroqua, Misa (enumerator mispelling of her nickname Visa)...it has been a challenge to track her down.

She and GW had many children:
Mary Estell
Walter Jefferson
Roy Ulysses
Ida Effie (married Armstrong)
Ernest James
Ollie/Olive (married Barker, then Schell)
Arch
Marion Frances
Uzell/Euzelle (Married Poncier, then Massey, then Dunn)

IF you are a relative of Viroqua please contact me.
I would love to see what she looked like or how her personality was.
