WATERBURY — Mr. John J. Almeida, 77, of Wheeler Street, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Waterbury Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy (Fisherman) Almeida.

Mr. Almeida was born on Dec. 26, 1931, in Waterbury, a son of the late Antonio and Priscilla (Coelho) Almeida. He worked as a toolmaker for NEDCO until his retirement. Previous to NEDCO, he worked at Watertown Manufacturing for more than 20 years and worked at and later owned Electronic Enterprises.

He and his wife were members of Cha-Rumba Ballroom Dance Club. They loved to travel the world together and with the group. He was an avid Yankees fan.

In addition to his wife, Dorothy, John is survived by his son, Rick Almeida of Waterbury; and his two daughters, Patricia Varanoski and her husband, James, of Waterbury, and Susan Brillinger of South Carolina. He also leaves his sister, Rosemary Johnson of Waterbury; his granddaughter, Christina Almeida; a grandson, Devin Kaufmann; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Linda Almeida, and his brothers, Joseph and Frank Almeida.

A funeral will be held 9 a.m. Monday, April 20, from Maiorano Funeral Home, 95 Willow St., Waterbury, to St. Michael's Church, Waterbury, for a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m.
