John W. Farnsworth married Elizabeth Parman on August 16, 1848 in Green Co., Tennessee.

He served in the Confederacy during the Civil War as a Private in the 64th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry, Company I. He was captured at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee by Union forces on September 9, 1863.

Most of the 64th Regiment was captured by Union forces at Cumberland Gap in September of 1863, and 288 men of the 64th Regiment were prisoners at Camp Douglas.

John W. Farnsworth died at Camp Douglas on November 29, 1864.
