Albert Cooper Allen Sr., died Tuesday in a Medford hospital. He was 97.

Mr. Allen, author, world traveler, newspaper man, freelance photographer for early day "motion picture" studios and state agricultural commissioner for several years, had been in ill health for some time.

He was born in 1875, on an Army base near Nashville, Tenn. He came to Oregon in 1904 to continue his varied career.

Hans owned the first self propelled and largest houseboat, ever operated on Upper Klamath Lake, The Jim Jackson, on which the family spent their summers.

He operated Rocky Point Resort during 1922- 23 when travel to lake points was largely by boat. He drove one of the first automobiles to Crater Lake and also owned the Hollywood Orchards near Medford.

Among the books he wrote for adults and children was "Crater Lake and Its Legends," which went into its fifth printing.

In later years as a hobby he hand printed some of his children's books in his own printshop at his home on the Rogue River.

Mr. Allen served as a second lieutenant with the U.S. Volunteers in the Spanish-American War.

Survivors include a son, James Cooper Allen Jr.; grandson, James Cooper Allen III; and great-grandchildren, Constance Allen and James Cooper Allen IV, all of Medford.
