"The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me; Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
The Twenty-Third Psalm

A smoldering cigarette may have started a house fire that killed a father and his two sons early Sunday morning, officials said.

The three men were identified as Herbert Betchan, 74, Herbert DeWayn Betchan, 43, and John Mikel Betchan, 38, all of Hunter, according to the Garber Funeral Home.

They were pronounced dead at the scene and autopsies performed as Bass Baptist Hospital in Enid showed they died of smoke inhalation, said Gil Gilliam, public information officer for the Hunter Fire Department.

A neighbor reported the fire in Hunter about 4 a.m.Sunday after the two men driving through town spotted the flames, Gilliam said.

“By the time we got there, the house was pretty much engulfed,” he said. “When we got there, probably a third of it was engulfed and we ended up losing half the house.”

“We’re not sure what caused the fire. The only thing we can guess is that it started in the northeast corner of the house on the bottom floor.”

“We feel like it was a cigarette. We think probably the father was in the living room, probably sitting in a chair, it fell on the carpet and eventually started the blaze.”

Gilliam said the fire is probably the worst in the city’s history. Hunter has a population of about 180.
