Herman , born July 27, 1900 in Spring Grove, Minnesota, was the son of Gilbert and Ingeborg (Belle) Winjum Bersrud. He lived and worked in some of the local stores in Spring Grove. He also did farm threshing in north Dakota and worked at Western Electric in Chicago for two years.

On January 20, 1927 he married Laura Linde and they lived in the Wilmington area prior to moving to a farm in Black Hammer owned by his grandfather Ellling Winjum. After Elling's death in 1942, Herman and Laura took over and farmed there until they retired in 1963. The farm had been in the family since 1853, when it was homesteaded by great-grandparents, Jens Ellinson Winjum and Anna Otterness Winjum.

Herman and Laura were the parents of three children: Harriet (Mrs. George Chandler), Lois (Mrs. Allan Morken), and Fredrick.
