SISTER M. MERCIA ZERWEKH Died on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Fremont, CA. She was 98 years old. Born on May 1, 1908 in Denver, CO, Sister Mercia was a Dominican Sister for 80 years. Her teaching ministry brought her to Sacred Heart Elementary and High Schools, Saint Michael Elementary and High Schools, Los Angeles; Saint Boniface School, Anaheim; Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, La Canada, Flintridge; Immaculate Conception Academy, San Francisco; Saint Elizabeth High School, Oakland and San Gabriel Mission High School, San Gabriel. Sister also served as principal at Sacred Heart Elementary School and at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy Elementary Division and from 1951 until 1973 as school librarian at various school sites. From 1973 until 2002 she was part-time proctor at Sacred Heart High School. Her last assignment in 2002 was to Saint Martin Residence, Fremont and the apostolate of prayer. Sister Mercia is survived by two sisters, Sister Edward Mary, CSJ and Cecilia Zerwekh, many other relatives and friends and the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 12th at 5:00 p.m. at the Dominican Sisters Chapel, 43326 Mission Blvd., Fremont. Burial in the Dominican Sisters Cemetery will follow immediately. Memorials may be made to the Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund or the Mother Pia Backes Education Fund, 43326 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539 or the Vision of Hope Fund, 1555 - 34th Ave., Oakland, CA 94601.
