Susan was the youngest of two daughters born to Samuel Bennett and Isabella Hardesty. She spent her girlhood on a farm in Spencer County and joined the Baptist church early in life. She married Oliver Perry Tichenor in 1857 and together they had nine children.

She was well known for her fried chicken and superb garden vegetables. On at least two of her birthdays, her living children celebrated by holding a 'family reunion' using the time to celebrate her cooking and her life.

She died suddenly and her obituary was printed in the Spencer Magnet on Aug 28, 1919.
