As an eight-year-old lad, he journeyed westward from Pennsylvania with his parents to Illinois by wagon train. After early education in public schools, he turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. He served in the Seventh Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War and was honorably discharged in October 1864. He published a book on his wartime experiences in 1910 titled: Observations of an Illinois Boy in Battle, Camp, and Prisons – 1861-1865. He married Mary L. Swisher in 1867. They had two daughters. He retired to Mendota, IL.
