Erie -Clyde E(sic O) Hodgden, 98 of rural Erie, died at 11:25 p.m. Tuesday at the Labette County Medical Center where he had entered July 3. He had been in failing health the past year and had been a resident of the Presbyterian Manor since Mar 27. He was born Jan 16, 1886, at Galesburg, to Merrill and Laura (Grable) Hodgden. He lived in Rio Grande Valley, Texas, from 1924 to 1926, and in Kansas City, Mo., from 1929 to 1931, where he was employed by Curtis Harvester Inc. setting up combines and working as Field man. The remainder of his life he lived in the Galesburg-Erie area. He had lived on the same farm for the past 44 years.
He married Winnie Mae Culbertson on May 17, 1905 at Oswego. She died April 20, 1962. He was a member of the Osage Church of the Brethren at McCune, and he was a deacon of the Galesburg Church of the Brethren. In 1971, he received the Kansas Bankers Association Soil Conservation Award.
Survivors include: two sons, Eugene "Bill" of Chewelah, Wash., and the Rev. Ralph of Fredonia; two daughters, Edith Crumrine of Hazelton, Idaho, and Esther Hodgden of Erie: 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Bartmess of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Nina Weston of Del City, Okla.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters, and one son, Merle.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Burris-Carson-Wall Funeral Home with the Rev. George Harvey and the Rev. David Ackerman officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Galesburg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Osage Church of the Brethren.
