James was graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania in 1895. He was graduated from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1898 (though he had started his seminary education at some other now-not-known seminary). He was ordained to Presbyterian ministry on May 10, 1898 by the Presbytery of Washington. He served as pastor of the Presbyterian congregations in Early and Nemaha, Iowa 1899-1902. In 1905 be began his pastorate at the Presbyterian Church in Ireton, Iowa.
