Jonathan was a farmer in Pike township, and was the 2nd of 3 children of Henry L. and Martha (Brink) Stevens. He was reared on a farm and educated in the common school, beginning life for himself at the age of 21 as a farmer, which occupation he followed except while in the Army.

"Comrade Stevens was a farmer and was 34 years old when he joined the Federal army Aug. 13, 1862, at Towanda, Pa., joining Co. B, 141st Pa. V.I., 1st Brig., 2d Div., 3d A. C. October, 1862, he was confined in hospital at Lynchburg, Washington, Baltimore, and Little York, Pa., about five months, suffering with general debility. His services consisted of scouting, skirmishing, general guard and garrison duty and he was honorably discharged April 24, 1863, at Little York, Pa., on account of physical disability.
He was a charter member of Maj. Spalding Post, 33."

He married, May 27, 1863, Miss Sarah C., daughter of Nathan and Delia M. (White) Rockwell. They had one child, Ella M., born Oct. 25, 1864, who married F. E. Eastabrook. Jonathan was a life-long Republican.
