Second child of Jonathan and Hepzibah Stone Gates, was born at Hubbardston, Mass.
In 1798 he and his wife Rebecca (daughter of John Coleman of Templeton, Mass.) moved to Vermont and settled in Montgomery, where he was one of the first settlers, and he, together with James Upham and Elijah Learned, served as the first Board of Selectmen after the organization of the town in 1802.
They were the parents of six children:
Vienna, b. 1803
Stephen b 1805
Laura, b. 1806 (married Moses Head)
Almira, b. 1809
Darius, b. 1811
George C.C., b. 1816.
