Son of Joseph Thurman III born 1770 in Prince William, Virginia and died in Dec 1803 in Maryville, Blount, Tennessee and Nancy Franklin born Oct 11, 1773 in Amherst, Virginia and died August 11, 1829 in Amherst, Virgnia.

He married Nancy Tipton abt 1820 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Father of 11 children: Nancy born 1820, Patrick born 1822, William born 1823, Joseph born 1823, Esther born 1824, Preston born 1829, Reuben born 1830, Mary Ann born about 1831, James born 1832, Henry Carrick born 1839, and John Tyler born 1841. His wife Nancy died about 1845 and he married Alcy Childress Tipton on Jun 4, 1846 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Jabus sold land in Blount County from 1822 through 1829. One piece was in Cades Cove, now part of the Great Smokey Mountains Park.

February 1891 Obituary - "Death of an Old Citizen - Mr JABEZ THURMAN, one of the oldest citizens of Knox County, died at his home in the 13th Civil District Friday night. He was 96 years old last Christmas. He was a native of Virginia, but came to Tennessee with his father when but a child. He lived in Blount County for a time, but has been a citizen of Knox County for well nigh three quarters of a century. He was an honest man, respected and esteemed by all his neighbors and by all who knew him. He was a distant relative of Honorable Allen G Thurman of Ohio. The funeral will be held at Mt. Olive Church four miles south of Knoxville today...".
