WINSTED — Anna H. Landi, 98, of Chestnut Street, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Feb. 15, 2009.

Born in Winsted, June 24, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Rosario and Josephine (Cantone) Gozzo and had lived here all of her life. Prior to her retirement, she was the owner and operator of Landi's Deluxe Package Store for over 45 years. She was the first woman in Connecticut to have a license to own and operate a package store. She opened her first store in a little hole in the wall on Main Street in the West End. When asked about financing, she simply smiled and said, "There was none. I really started from scratch." The rent was $13 a month. Eventually, she was running one of the largest and most successful package stores in Litchfield County. The secret of her success was nothing more than long hours and hard work. During the flood of 1955, she not only suffered the loss of her business, but several apartment buildings located in the center of town. In 1957, she rebuilt her business and continued to operate the store for another 28 years, retiring at the age of 75. She had a passion for cooking, collecting cookbooks and reading the Wall Street Journal and would often share recipes with her customers, but her greatest passion and devotion was to her family. She was a charter member of the Winsted Senior Center, the Italian American Women's Club and was a communicant of St. Joseph Church.

Her survivors include her children, Corrine, Sylvia & C. William "Sonny" Landi, all of Winsted and Albert Landi and his wife Eileen of Simsbury; 6 grandchildren, Jason, Michael, Jennifer, Darren, Dean and Drake Landi; and 4 great grandchildren, Greg Deonna, Gabriel and Aubrey Landi; dear relatives & extended family, Molly, Frank & Mary Oddo of Torrington, the Nicosia family of Winsted and Mary Dileo of New Hartford. While ill at home for the last few years, she was cared for lovingly and tirelessly by Corrine and Sylvia. She was daily visited by friends and former customers who always commented on her cheerfulness and beautiful smile. A special thank you to Dr. David Lawrence, Patty Keefe, Patty Ferreria and Mary Vincent of the Foothills VNA.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Maloney Funeral Home 55 Walnut Street, to St. Joseph Church for the funeral liturgy at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph new Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday morning prior to leaving for church.
