Uncle Hicks was one of the best uncles in the world. Looking back, I don't think he ever had much money, but was rich in all the ways that count. His house was always open to welcome and feed all who entered. He and Aunt Nelle raised a family that has remained close through the years. Uncle Hicks grew the best grapes I have ever tasted and was most generous in giving me all I could eat. Many things remind me of him, but none more than sweet potatoes. I have the best memories of arriving home from school on an October day to find our horse, Frank, harnessed and the uncles gathered to dig sweet potatoes in the bottom. As I eat a sweet potato today, it makes the taste of them all the sweeter.
