Rev. Norbert Herman Miller, age 86, died on November 1, 2000, while weather-proofing a door at home. He had been in fragile health for several years. He was born on April 1, 1914, at home on a dairy farm near Seymour, WI, to Lydia (Maas) and Reinhold Miller, devoutly religious people and hard-working dairy farmers who also ran a nursery and kept bees. He was an identical twin.
Norbert attended the Crystal Spring Grade School and was graduated from Seymour High School in 1932. At age 14, during a tuberculosis outbreak, he dedicated his life to Christ and determined to go into the ministry. He was graduated from North Central College, Naperville, IL, in 1936, and from the Evangelical Theological Seminary on the same campus in 1939. A significant part of his seminary education was six months' work in a mental hospital. He was awarded a Master of Divinity in 1972 from the Seminary.
Norbert was united in marriage to Mary K. Miller on May 10, 1939, in Louisville, KY. They had 8 children.
After seminary he served joyfully and successfully in many small-town and rural Wisconsin churches: Prairie du Chien Evangelical Church (1939-43), Wauzeka/Eastman Evangelical United Brethren (1943-61), Elk Mound/Iron Creek Evangelical United Brethren (1961-64), Lime Ridge/Sandusky/Cazenovia United Methodist (1964-82), and Greenwood/Christie United Methodist (1982-86) before retiring to rural Hillpoint.
All his churches grew. His talent was with young people and in visiting people in their homes to spread the message of caring and the Word of God. He was a conscientious objector during World War II and did his volunteer service at a mental hospital. In 1987 he received the honorary title of Kentucky Colonel.
Norbert had many interests and hobbies. He had a lifelong love affair with flowers and fruit trees. He and his wife beautified every property they lived on, and any visitor who showed an interest went home with plants, seedlings, slips, or flowers from his garden . For a time in Wauzeka, the family raised Angora rabbits for their wool and had a gloxinia business. Norbert was a rock hound and collected semi-precious gemstones, teaching many young people how to make jewelry. For many years another passion was 3-D color slide photography. He also loved to read, filling the house with books and magazines. Singing and listening to religious music gave him joy which he passed on to all around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister Ruth, his sister Wilamine Peotter, and his twin brother Norman E. Miller.
Visitation was from 4-8 p.m., Saturday, November 4, at the Farber Funeral Home, Reedsburg, and from 1-2 p.m. at the Lime Ridge United Methodist Church. The funeral service was at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 5, at the Lime Ridge UM Church with Pastor Robert Maeglin officiating. Burial was at the Sandusky UM Church cemetery (Hy 130/Sandusky Rd., south of Lime Ridge) with a lunch served at the church afterward.
