James Mack Moss was the son of Amos Mack and Martha Almond, Moss He was born in the Hyatts Creek area of Cherokee County. On May 26, 1900 in Topton, NC he married Vinnie Olive Truett daughter of William Alexander "Will" and Mary Cilia "Kizzy" Patterson, Truett.

James and Vinnie were farmers in the Hyatts Creek section of Cherokee County, later they moved to Marble where James operated a corn mill. They were the parents of six children, McKinley Moss, Dixie Moss-Montieth, Ellen Moss-Gunter, Frankie Moss-Early, Willa Belle Moss and James Mack Moss, Jr.

Moss Cemetery is named after James's grandfather Henry Moss who donated the land for the cemetery.
