Abbott was born on Sept. 12, 1833 in Maryland. His occupation listed at the time of his enlistment in Company H was “engineer”. Joseph served three full years in the ranks of the Thirty-eighth Indiana before being mustered out of federal service on Sept. 17, 1864 – just sixteen days after the Battle of Jonesboro, GA.

He married Miss Annie Donaldson (1842-1906).

At the time of the 1880 U.S. Census, Joseph lived in New Albany, Floyd Co., IN. Twenty years later, the U.S. Census counted him as a resident of Jeffersonville, Clark Co., IN. He applied for a federal pension on Sept. 11, 1884 (app. #522,051; cert. #451,354 - Indiana). Abbott died at age 78 on Feb. 2, 1912.
