William C. "Bill" Girard Sr., 84, of Hillsboro, passed away Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. with visitation to follow Sunday evening, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Hillsboro, with the Rev. B. George as celebrant, assisted by Deacon Jim Poole. Burial will follow at White Rock Cemetery in Ross, Texas.
Bill was born in West, Texas, to the late W. J. "Bill" Girard and Julia Beseda Girard. He graduated from West High School in 1942, and joined the U. S. Army Air Corp. On March 3, 1945, he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Greenhill, in Macon, Ga. After discharge from the service, he continued serving for the next 32 years in Federal Service, progressing from an entry-level clerk typist position, to one of the highest levels of responsibility attainable in government service. He received numerous awards and decorations for exceptional and meritorious service throughout his career. Bill retired in 1979, and was recognized in the Congressional Record with "A Tribute to Bill Girard," by the Honorable Joseph P. Addabbo, for his 35 years of dedicated service. Bill achieved his life long dream of retiring and moving back to his home state of Texas in 1980, to pursue a second career on his farm. Bill remained an active member in his community and served in various leadership positions in Knights of Columbus, American Legion, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the former Hillsboro Kiwanis Club, as well as being a vital member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church.
Bill was preceded in death by a brother, Lt. Louis Girard, who was killed in action while serving in the U. S. Army Air Corp in World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ruth; sons, Chris Girard and wife, Patti, of Portland, Ore., Steve Girard, of Bethesda, Md., Tim Girard and wife, Konjit, of Lake Dallas, Texas, Pat Girard and wife, Cheryl, of Hillsboro, Jeff Girard, of Hiawatha, Calif., Ed Girard, of Hillsboro; daughter, Cindy Phillips and husband, Greg, of Crestview, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;
