Mrs. Mattie Ruth McCants East of Pensacola, died Saturday, January 10, 2009 at a local hospital.
Mrs. East was born to Mrs. Nan Thomas Walker McCants and Gus McCants in Tunnel Springs, AL (Monroe County). Mrs. East was the youngest of eight children of which seven preceded her in death. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized and joined Antoida Baptist Church #1 of Tunnel Springs, AL. She was joined in Holy Matrimony to John Howard East in 1939.
After moving to Pensacola, she and her husband joined Trinity Baptist Church under the leadership of J.E. Hall and remained a member until her death. She was educated in the public schools of Tunnel Springs, AL and Monroe, AL. She was a member of International Eastern Star. She was a stay-at-home mother and enjoyed doing things for her family. Her hobbies included cooking and sewing.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Mr. John Howard East. Her youngest daughter, Lillie R. East Sorrell, also preceded her in death on December 23, 2006.
Mrs. East is survived by three sons and a daughter, Charles Howard (Barbara) East, Robert East, and Josephine East-Potts, all of Chicago, IL, Willie L. East (Deloris) East, San Jose, CA, and a lovely and devoted daughter, Eunice East, Pensacola, FL; five grandchildren, Darrin Gaines, Erik East, and Michelle East, all of Chicago, IL, Kaon Jabbar East, Oregon, and Andre Sorrell, Pensacola; three great-grandchildren, Alanenca Montgomery, Pensacola, Erika East and Jordyn Nikhole Willians, both of Chicago, IL; six nieces, one of which she helped raise, Christine McCants Kyles; four nephews, one of who preceded her in death, Robert Walker; and a host of cousins, other relatives, friends, and church family.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m., at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. E.A. Hickerson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Visitation will be held today from 8-9 p.m. at Joe Morris & Son Funeral Home.
