Tavia was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and quilting. She sewed most of the clothing for her children when they were growing up. When she was in her 60's she took a class on doll making. Her dolls were very pretty and actually looked professionally made. She liked to approach all of her sewing in a professional manner. She liked things to be done, and done well.
She was a member of Boyd's Chapel United Methodist Church in Leckie, West Virginia, where she was very active. She was also a member of the Easter Star.
Tavia was married to Ezra Smith on January 1, 1936. They were married for a total of 54 years, up until Ezra's death in 1990. They had four children (Carol, Brenda, Alfred, and Belva Kay), and eight grandchildren.
She died October 30, 1999 in Princeton, West Virginia. She was 83 years old. She is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
