Born on September 17 1922 in a farm house in Otsego County, Michigan. During WWII he served in the Army 96th Infantry Division with 2 years in the South Pacific and major amphibious landings in the Philippine Islands and Okinawa. He was awarded 2 Purple Hearts, 2 Bronze Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge and a Presidential Unit Citation. He graduated from MSU with an Agricultural Engineering degree and was employed by the USDA for 33 years. Retirement years were spent in Cadillac and Ludington, MI and Florida. He was active in Habitat for Humanity.
His many beloved survivors include his adoring wife, Anne Abbott; children, and spouses, John Abbott, Jan and Bill Haller, Debra Morse, Dan and Allison Steketee, Sarah and Ken Smith, Robert and Becky Steketee, and numerous grand and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Tom.
Robert was the kindest man anyone would ever want to know.
Graveside services will be held May 8, 2009 at Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing, Michigan with the Rev. Bruce Cromwell, Pastor of Central Free Methodist Church, officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust, 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY 41076 in memory of Mr. Abbott. The family is being served by the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Lansing, MI.
