Born David Arthur Roberts, he was a left-handed pitcher for thirteen seasons (1969 to 1981) with the San Diego Padres, Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners and New York Mets. He was a member of the 1979 World Champion Pirates' team and appeared in one game during the National League Championship Series. He made his big league debut on July 6, 1969, during the Padres inaugural season. He enjoyed his most successful year in 1973, when he recorded 17 victories and posted a 2.85 ERA with the Astros. In 445 career regular season games, Roberts won 103 and lost 125 with a 3.78 lifetime ERA. He died from lung cancer.
