Patrolman Richard S. Burchfield was an officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department in Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado when he was shot and killed during an armed robbery investigation. He was investigating a series of armed robberies and was checking an area for suspects. He had told dispatch he was returning to headquarters but a short time later, a citizen called and said there was an officer slumped over his steering wheel near Bijou and El Paso Streets. Other officers raced to the scene and found Patrolman Burchfield had been shot to death. The case was never solved.

He was buried at the Calvary Cemetery in Yakima, Washington, per document requesting a military headstone.
