Norma was born on April 10, 1920, in Petersburg, NE, to Ralph and Quin (Penney) Watson. A little sister, Marjorie Viola, joined Norma on June 23, 1922. They spent their early years in Nebraska until the entire family packed up and moved to Wyoming in 1926. Norma remembered being afraid they would be attacked by Indians on their way. They settled near Four Corners, WY, where Norma and then Marjorie rode a horse to school. Some of the jobs Norma had were cleaning the glass chimneys and trimming the wicks on the oil lamps they used for light. She also remembered baking cakes in the wood stove whenever they had company.
Later, they moved to Newcastle, WY; Shaunovan, Saskatchewan, Canada; Hardin, MT; back to Newcastle; and eventually to Sundance, WY. While living in Hardin, in 1937, Norma met and married Vincent Porter. A daughter, Norma Jean, was born to this union on March 31, 1938. They were later divorced. Norma married Elvin R. Leeman in Sundance on November 27, 1941. Elvin became "Daddy" to Norma Jean. Norma and Elvin moved to Riverton, WY, back to Sundance; Denver, CO; back to Sundance; Newcastle, WY; and then to Riverton where Elvin went to work for the State of Wyoming. Later, they moved to Cheyenne, WY, where they lived for 50 years. While they were in Cheyenne, a son, Elvin Ray Jr., was born on May 20, 1953. While living in Cheyenne, Norma devoted herself to caring for her home and family.
Norma and Elvin were both active in the Order of the Eastern Star and Norma was a member of Daughters of the Nile. After retirement, they traveled extensively with their travel trailer. In 2004, Norma and Elvin moved to Spearfish, SD, to be near their daughter, Norma Jean.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Elvin Leeman, Spearfish, SD; sister, Marjorie Goodson, Sundance, WY; daughter, Norma Jean (Earl) Ollila, Belle Fourche, SD; son, E. Ray Leeman, Jr. (special friend, Kathy Myers) of Idaho Falls, ID; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter-in-law, Barbara Leeman; granddaughter, Jennifer Leeman; grandson, Brian Leeman; and grandson-in-law, Rick Richardson.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Eastern Star Scholarship Fund in Norma's name. Checks can be sent to Norma Ollila, 419 2nd Ave., Belle Fourche, SD 57717.
