Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in Turin to a noble family, Agostino Richelmy studied at the local seminary and following his priesthood ordination in April 1873, voluntarily joined the Garibaldian forces in the war of 1866. Joining the teaching faculty of the seminary of Turin, in 1886 he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Ivrea, receiving his episcopal consecration on October 28 of that year. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Turin on September 18, 1897, Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of June 19, 1899 with the title of Sant'Eusebio, later opting for the title of Santa Maria in Via on November 27, 1911. Passing away in Turin following a surgical intervention for kidney stones, Richelmy was originally buried the clergy's chapel at the city's monumental cemetery but in 1927 his remains were transferred to the Consalata Shrine and re-interred in a specially constructed marble sarcophagus. Remaining a Garibaldian at heart, for years it is known that he he wore his red shirt underneath his cassock.
