Joseph M.(Mc) Adkinson, entered the Civil War in March of 1863 with the 3rd Indiana Cavalry, Co A....He was at the Battle of Gettysburg and in the group of cavalrymen that held the Union position until the Infantry arrived...

He was injured in Sherman's Raid around Richmond-Chickahominy Swamp, "Yellow Tavern", Virginia. Joseph was injured on May 11th, 1864....He was taken to the hospital at Point Lookout, Maryland..He had a wound from a ball on his right knee that would not heal, so they amputated his leg....he died several days later... His temporary burial was on the shores of Maryland....

His letters home during the war are on repository at Hanover College, Hanover, Indiana.

His parents were Francis and Eliza (McHenry) Adkinson of Moorefield, Switzerland County, Indiana...
