Alexander was born on March 25, 1867 at Pomeroy, Ohio. He was the son of William Nelson and Sarah Ann (Russell) Hysell.

On March 2, 1901, he married Fannie Myrtle Shaver at Huntington, West Virginia. Together they had eleven children. They were Leatha Mae, Sally Ann, Cecilia Marguerite, Marvis C., William Robert, Charles Edward, Harry Woodrow, Martha Virginia, John Benson, Thelma Louise and James Wetzel.

Alexander was originally buried at Johnson Cemetery, James River Road, Harveytown, Cabell County, West Virginia. Because of road construction (putting in interstate), the cemetery had to be moved. Family members were given the chance to decide where their loved one would be buried. On October 7, 1963, Alexander was interred at Crooks Cemetery, Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia.
